Temporary Foreign Worker Program (LMIA Based Program): A Canadian employer needs a LMIA (Labour market impact assessment) who needs to hire a foreign national. LMIA is a test for a Canadian employer to show that there is no Canadian citizen or permanent resident available to do the job. And the issuance of a work permit to a foreign national will not have a negative impact on the employment and wages of workers in Canada.
For this type of work permit, the first step is for employer to get a LMIA approval. Once LMIA is approved, foreign workers who is qualified for the job applies for work permit. Foreign workers need an LMIA approval letter and job offer letter from the employer to apply for a work permit.

Under this program, you can travel and work in Canada for up to 2 years. There are 3 types under this category.
- Working holidays: This program is for you if you are from partner countries listed above. Even if you do not have a job offer in Canada you qualify for this category. You can also work for more than one employer and at multiple locations under this program. Also meet other criteria as shown below.
- Young professionals: For this category you must have a job offer that is tied to your professional development. You will be allowed to work for the same employer only at the same location. Your work must be paid for, and self-employment does NOT qualify for this program. Also meet other criteria as shown below.
- International Co-op: this option is for those who are post-secondary students. You have a job offer or work placement or internship in Canada and this job offer or internship is required to finish your program. You will be allowed to work for the same employer only at the same location
Other than requirements above: You must also meet the requirements below.
- be a citizen of partner country
- have a valid passport for the duration of your stay in Canada
- Your work permit in Canada can’t be valid longer than your passport
- be between the ages of 18 and 30 (inclusive) and 18 to 35 for some programs (age as per applicable program)
- have a minimum of CAN$2,500 to help cover your expenses in Canada
- have health insurance for the duration of your stay
- You may have to present evidence of this insurance when you enter Canada
- not be inadmissible to Canada
- have, before departure, a round-trip ticket or demonstrate that you’ll have the financial resources to purchase a departure ticket at the end of your authorized stay in Canada
- not be accompanied by dependents
- pay the fees
