A foreign national who intends to study in an educational program in Canada that is more than 6 months, they need a student visa to study in Canada.
One of the major attractions for students to study in Canada is post-graduation work permit (PGWP). So, it is very important for students to choose a Designated Learning Institute (DLI) to be eligible for PGWP, however not all DLI’s are eligible for PGWP. List of DLI colleges can be found on Government of Canada website.
A student visa can be processed under a special program called Student Direct Stream (SDS). Under SDS program visa processing is faster and documentation requirements are less compared to other study visa programs. However, there are only a few country residents who can apply under SDS program.
Eligibility requirements for SDS Program: –
- If you are a resident of the countries listed below, then you will be eligible to apply for a study permit under the SDS program.
- Antigua and Barbuda
- Brazil
- China
- Colombia
- Costa Rica
- India
- Morocco
- Pakistan
- Peru
- Philippines
- Senegal
- Saint Vincent and the Grenadines
- Trinidad and Tobago
- Vietnam
- You have an acceptance letter from a post-secondary designated learning institution (DLI)
- You live outside of Canada when you apply
- You have proof that you have paid your tuition for your first year of study
- You have a Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC) of CAN$10,000
- You need to get a medical exam before you apply (if you need one)
- You need to get a police certificate before you apply (if you need one)
- You need your most recent secondary or post-secondary school transcript(s)
- You must have a language test result that shows either:
- An International English Language Testing System (IELTS) academic or general training score of 6.0 or higher in each skill (reading, writing, speaking, and listening), or
